       hardware installation

Installing the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4
Step 1 Protecting from ESD

Grounding protects the components from the static electricity that can be naturally present (electrostatic discharge, ESD).

  • Notice: Risk of damage to the equipment due to electrostatic discharge. Always: Touch the working surface before touching electronics.

  • Ideally: Use ESD protective equipment, such as ESD table mats and grounding cords.

Step 2 Aligh the X655 carrier board and CM4

  • Place the board in front of you, the connectors facing to the top.

  • Orient the CM4 as indicated by the arrow.

  • Use the outline of the chips to help find the correct orientation of the CM4.

  • Carefully place the CM4 without force.

  • The CM4 should fall into place slightly when correctly aligned.

  • Confirm the CM4 is correctly mated by looking at each corner of the X655.
Step 3 Installing the CM4

  • Press the CM4 board onto the board-to-board connectors until it clicks into place.

Make sure you press on both sides (the two long edges).

  • This requires quite a bit of force. If you don't hear a loud click, it is most likely not fully seated.

  • Do a visual check to make sure the CM4 is installed correctly: it needs to run parallel to the X655.

Step 4 Installing the fan board

  • Position the fan board on top of the CM4.

  • Secure the fan board (indicated by the yellow arrow) in place with four M2.5x8 long screws.

  • Secure the CM4 (indicated by the blue arrow) in place with one M2.5x5 screw.

  • Plug the fan connector into the socket.

Step 5 Installing the RTC battery

  • Insert the CR1220 coin-cell  battery (making sure that the battery isoriented correctly. Positive side (+) UP).

Step 6 Installing the M.2 2242 NVMe SSD device - Optional

  • Insert the M.2 SSD into M.2 slot then slide the SSD drive into the M.2 slot at 30 degrees while pushing it gently till it fits into the slot.

  • Notice that after insertion into the M.2 slot, the SSD drive inclined angle to the board.

  • Press the M.2 SSD drive till it sits on the riser screw then lock it in place using the M2 mounting screw.

       hardware connections

   1

Connect the monitor for local operation- The HDMI pass-through transmits both video and audio signals from your target host.

Locat a HDMI port on your PC/server and connect using a miniHDMI to HDMI cable

   3

Locat an USB port on your PC/server and connect using an USB-C to USB-A cable

Connect to an USB Type-C power supply (5V ≥3A)
(Not required if Power over Ethernet).

   5

Connect to your network using an Ethernet cable

  6   ATX power control wiring

Important Notes
1. The pin assignments for the panel header may differ by model. Refer to the motherboard user's manual for the actual pin assignments.
2. HDD LED and Power LED need proper polarity connection to funciton. Check your motherboard manual for polarity requirements.

7    OLED display wiring - WARNING! The OLED glass can crack if force is used to install it.

How to install the PCI card

   1

Unplug your computer. Power down your computer and then unplug the power cable and all the other cables that are connected to the back.

2   Open your computer. PCI cards need to be installed inside your Computer's chassis.

  3

Remove the metal bay cover. Each PCI slot will have a bay associated with it on the back of the computer. When there's nothing installed, the bays are covered by small metal protectors. You can remove one by unscrewing the single screw holding it in place and then lifting it directly out of the case. Set the screw aside.

  4

Gripping the PCI card by the sides. Do not touch the contacts along the bottom, and try to avoid touching any of the circuitry.

  5

Insert the card and press it firmly straight down into the slot. Ensure that the card is level and seated fully in the slot before continuing. note that the X650 PCI card is not required to insert into PCI slot on the motherboard.

  6

Secure the card. Use the screw that you removed from the metal bay cover and use it to secure the card into the same hole. Tighten the screw firmly but not so tightly that it will strip later.
